    Der Beitrag setzt sich kritisch mit einem derzeit häufig rezipierten Verständnis des Begriffs ›Formfunktion‹ (formal function) auseinander, das im Anschluss u.a. an die Formenlehre von Erwin Ratz im nordamerikanischen Diskurs entwickelt wurde. Ausgehend von dieser Kritik legt der Beitrag anhand der Formfunktionen ›Hauptsatz‹ (main theme), ›Überleitung‹ (transition), ›Seitensatz‹ (subordinate theme) und ›Schlussgruppe‹ (closing section) eine alternative Auffassung für die musikalische Analyse von Sonatenhauptsätzen dar, die an Sonatenkompositionen aus der zweiten Hälfte des sowie des frühen Jahrhunderts veranschaulicht wird.
