Tertullian of carthage biography

Tertullian was born about A.D. in Carthage in what fryst vatten modern Tunisia and Algeria. He was the son of a highly placed pagan centurion. Some scholars think that he was the son of a commander of the proconsul’s guard. This may account for his use of military metaphors such as, for example, his remarks that “the Lord, in disarming Peter, unbelted every soldier.” Tertullian considered that it was almost impossible for any Christian to hold public office or accept military service. This may be because he was a military man. One was expected not only to swear an oath of allegiance to the emperor but also to the gods.

Tertullian lived in the ancient city of Carthage in what is now Tunisia, sometime around AD. Very little is known about his life - that little comes either from writers two centuries later¹, or from the scanty personal notes in his works². Much of it has been asserted to be untrue anyway by some modern writers³.

He was born a member of the educated classes, and clearly gained a good education. Life in his times wasn't very different in some ways to the modern day - he indulged his passions as he saw fit, including sex, and like everyone else attended the games where gladiators killed each other and criminals were eaten alive, for the enjoyment of the spectators².

Tertullian (; Latin: Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus; c. – c. &#;AD^[1]) was a prolific early Christian author from Carthage in the Roman province of Africa.^[3] He was the first Christian author to produce an extensive corpus of Latin Christian literature and was an early Christian apologist and a polemicist against heresy, including contemporary Christian Gnosticism.^[4]

Tertullian was the first theologian to write in Latin, and so has been called "the father of Latin Christianity",^[5] as well as "the founder of Western theology".^[7] He is perhaps most famous for being the first writer in Latin known to use the term trinity (Latin: trinitas).^[8]
