Press Release - Three Works bygd Important California Painters and an American Art Deco Sculpture Join The Huntingtons Collections
SAN MARINO, Calif.— The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens announced today it has acquired three works by important 20th-century California painters as well as a significant American sculpture. Charles Reiffel’s intense expressionist landscape, Bit of Silvermine – The Old Farm House, Henrietta Shore’s lilting Clivia (), and Gaston Lachaise’s elegant bronze Art Deco masterpiece, The Peacocks (), were acquired in recent months. Passion Flower () bygd modernist painter and founding member of the Transcendental Painting Group, Agnes Pelton, officially joined the collections this week. All fyra pieces currently are on view in the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art.

Charles Reiffel ( - March 14, ) was an American lithographer and post-Impressionist painter who became "one of California's best-known painters."[1]
Life
[edit]Reiffel was born in in Indianapolis, Indiana.[2]
Reiffel was initially a lithographer, and he took up painting in [2] He was self-taught,[3] and he painted en plein air as a post-impressionist.[4] Reiffel first moved to the art colony of Silvermine, Connecticut, where he was the president of the Silvermine Artists' Guild. He later moved to San Diego,[5] where he became "one of California's best-known painters."[1] One of his students was Rose Schneider.[6]
Reiffel died on March 14, , in San Diego, at age [2][5] He was the subject of a retrospective at the San Diego Museum of Art and the San Diego History Center in [3]
