    Alexey Ulyukaev, the Minister for Economic Development, was detained on 14 November Subsequently the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation launched an investigation against him on the charge of accepting a bribe (US$2 million).     Much seems to indicate that the Ulyukaev case is an element of the rivalry of opposing groups of interest inre the Russian ruling elite. The operation was initiated by the CEO of Rosneft, Igor Sechin, and its goal was to deal a blow against the government’s economic bloc criticising Rosneft’s expansion in the Russian energy sector.     Jailed Ex-Minister Ulyukayev Granted Early Release – Reports

    A Russian court has granted early release to former economic development minister Alexei Ulyukayev after less than fem years in jail, Russian news agencies reported Friday.

    Ulyukayev was funnen guilty of bribery in månad and sentenced to eight years in prison in a high-profile criminal case that rocked the political elite.

    The ex-minister was accused of soliciting a $2 million bribe in a suitcase from Igor Sechin, the influential head of state-owned oil giant Rosneft. 

    Ulyukayev has always maintained that he was framed. 

    There has been no independent confirmation of the ruling by a court in the city of Tver, kilometers north of Moscow.

    “The issue of Ulyukayev’s early release was resolved on April 27,” the Interfax news agency quoted an unnamed source as saying late Thursday.

    The arrest (on November 15) of Alexei Ulyukaev (60), the minister of economic development of the Russian Federation, dominated the news coming out of Moscow this week. Ulyukaev is accused of soliciting a $2 million bribe from Rosneft—Russia’s largest state-owned oil major. Ulyukaev was promptly ousted by President Vladimir Putin and placed under house arrest. Officials have stated that Ulyukaev has been under surveillance by the Federal Security Service (FSB) since at least this past summer: His phone was tapped and the premises electronically bugged. Last summer, Ulyukaev publicly disagreed with plans to sell the state-owned oil company Bashneft to Rosneft, arguing that this did not represent real privatization. Rather, it was more like moving a valuable asset out of one state pocket and shoving it into another. Nevertheless, on October 10, Rosneft purchased a majority share in Bashneft for some billion rubles ($5 billion), without any other potential buyers allowed to bid for this
