The world’s first major museum exhibition of Lebanese artist Saloua Raouda Choucair celebrates this remarkable artist’s extraordinary body of work.
Choucair is a pioneer of abstract art in the Middle East and, born in , takes her rightful position as a significant figure in the history of twentieth-century art.
Through painting and drawing, architecture, textiles and jewellery, as well as, of course, her prolific and experimental sculptures, visitors can discover how Choucair worked in diverse media pursuing her interests in science, mathematics and Islamic art and poetry. Many of the works, made over a period of five decades, have not previously been seen outside of Lebanon.

Tate Modern will present the world’s first major museum exhibition of Lebanese artist Saloua Raouda Choucair (b. ). Comprising over works, many of which have never been seen before and are being exhibited for the first time, this exhibition will bring together paintings, sculptures and other objects made by the artist over six decades, reflecting her interests in science, mathematics and Islamic art and poetry. In Choucair’s 97th year, this retrospective will celebrate her extraordinary body of work and her contribution to international modernism.

Saloua Raouda Choucair (Arabic: سلوى روضة شقير; June 24, – January 26, ) was a Lebanesepainter and sculptor.[1][2]
Life and career
[edit]Born in in Ain El Mraisseh, along Beirut's coastal Corniche, Lebanon,[3] Choucair came from a family of doctors, lawyers, engineers and historians.[4] Her father, Salim Rawda () was an expatriate in Australia trading herbs and writing manuscripts on their medicinal values.[3] When he returned to Lebanon in , he met and married Choucair's mother, Zalfa Amin Najjar (), a Brummana High School student who was fond of reciting poetry.[3] They had three children: Anis Rawda () was a businessman and a member of the Beirut municipality; Anissa Rawda Najjar () was a social activist, who was married to the late Fouad Najjar; and the youngest, Choucair, became one of the most prominent figures of Lebanese modernism.[3] When Choucair's father was in Damascus a
