    ABSTRACT

    Background:

    Improvement of the quality of life and self-efficacy of patients with hypertension is essential. The present study aimed to determine the effect of self-care education based on Orem’s nursing theory on the quality of life and self-efficacy in patients with hypertension.

    Methods:

    This quasi-experimental study was conducted in Mamasani, Iran, 2015. Eighty patients were selected using convenient sampling and divided equally into two control and experimental groups based on random allocation. An educational program based on Orem’s nursing theory and according to the needs of patients was conducted in the experimental group. Data were collected before, immediately after, and eight weeks after the intervention using “Quality of Life of Cardiac Patients” and “Strategies Used by People to Promote Health” Q

Objective: To support the use of Dorothea Orem's theory in the nursing management environment.     Biography of Dorothea E. Orem

    Dorothea Elizabeth Orem (July 15, 1914 – June 22, 2007) was one of America’s foremost nursing theorists who developed the Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, also known as the Orem Model of Nursing.

    Her theory defined Nursing as “The act of assisting others in the arvode and management of self-care to maintain or improve human functioning at the home level of effectiveness.” It focuses on each individual’s ability to perform self-care, defined as “the practice of activities that individuals initiate and perform on their own behalf in maintaining life, health, and well-being.”
