He received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil Language in 1978 for analyzing contemporary Tamil poetry, Pudukavithaiyin Thottramum Valarchiyum. He was a personal friend and contemporarily of the famous journalist and writer Ku. Alagirisami. Vallikannan was a straightforward adherent of Gandhi's philosophy, and many of his works were influenced by it.

Vaasanthi has since, barring a short interlude to raise her two boys, been writing, in Tamil and English.
