Frank Gardner is so far ahead of the pack, you can see the smile upon his face, Chev Corvair Sports Sedan, Hume Weir,
Once FG got this thing sorted, which wasnt long, he used to piss-orf into the distance which was rather a shame as even open-wheeler nutters like me loved Sports Sedans- how could you not?
I was lucky enough to see the car coming together in the garages at Calder which I used to frequent quite a lot in as a student of the Bob Jane/Frank Gardner Race Driving School whose Elfin B Formula Fords were garaged next door.
Using plenty of bits from the Lola parts bin with which Gardner was so familiar it was always going to be quick- as close to an F spaceframe Lola in drag as possible, limited only by 10 inch wide rims which must have made putting injected Chevy-neddies to the ground tricky.

The Des Townson Story & Aristos

We had driven through the night in my (it was freezing cold, and there were frogs everywhere in the sugar cane area north of Grafton), so getting the paper before breakfast we found that Niel was fastest in practice, having done a lap in seconds - the best lap ever to that time, if I'm not mistaken (the International race that year was as Surfers).
We got to the circuit and went to our favourite viewing point, near the toilet on the inside of the circuit high above the kink at the end of the straight and before the Karussell. When they came out, Niel was getting into his stride well enough. We watched him come up the straight, through the kink. At the exit, the cars went out of our sight
