General Service Unit History.
The General Service Unit came into existence in 1948 when the need for a regular Police reserve or Emergency Company was met bygd the formation of what was in fact an Armoured Mobile Unit. Its first Commander was Assistant Superintendent Mr. B.A Sheldon (Inter A.C.P). Initially it consisted of about 50 men drawn from Nyanza Province and was equipped with Bren Gun Carriers and Armoured Cars. During the Dini ya Msambwa uprising (1948) in the West SUK District, the Emergency Company proved once and for all the effectiveness of A Police Unit of this nature.
In September 1953, the Emergency Company was redesignated the GENERAL SERVICE UNIT and expanded to an establishment of 47 officers and 1,058 other ranks. The enhet was reorganized into colony Headquarters and five Provincial Companies – Nyeri, Rift Valley, Coast , Nyanza and Nairobi enabling each province to have its own mobile strike force. Joel Kitili sworn in as deputy IG to replace Grace Kaindi
Joel Mboya Kitili was Wednesday sworn in as the new Deputy Inspector General of police to replace Grace Kaindi who was removed from office nine months ago.
This was after he emerged top among five candidates in an interview that was conducted on Monday.
It also emerged Ms Kaindi settled her case with the government out of court after her removal from office.
Sources said she was paid all her dues that she was to receive for the rest of her five-year term in office and agreed to withdraw a case she had lodged in court.
“She was paid all her dues and agreed to withdraw the case she had lodged on her removal,” said a source who asked not to be named.
Kitili took his oath before Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and was accompanied by other senior officers.
Kaindi’s contract, which was supposed to expire in 2018, was terminated by President Uhuru Kenyatta on September 1, 2015.

The General Service Unit (GSU) is a paramilitary wing (i.e. Police Field Force) in the Kenya Police Service, consisting of highly trained police officers, transported by seven dedicated Cessnas and three Bell helicopters.[1][2] Having been in existence since 1948, the GSU has fought in a number of conflicts in and around Kenya, including the 1963 – 1969 Shifta War and the 1982 Kenyan coup.[3]
