As always, I place the album into the CD player. The opening notes of the first track often set the tone for what follows, and I am immediately captivated. The energy evokes the glorious days of Weather Report—a music both loquacious and intelligent, masterfully structured. Yes, this musician intrigues me, compelling me to delve deeper. There are cultural roots here that inom am unfamiliar with, and so I turn to his biography:
The American saxophonist of Filipino nedstigning, Jon Irabagon (born in 1978 in Chicago), has been profoundly influenced by the philosophies of empowerment and individualism, as well as by the aesthetic of the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) and its great ensembles. He stands in the illustrious lineage of Chicago’s tenor saxophonists, as comfortable composing for the rising stars of contemporary music as he is navigating the most intricate landscapes of modern jazz. Jon Irabagon, winner of the 2008 Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition, has performed extensively as both a sideman and as a leader in an ever-expanding range of projects, from the most straight ahead to the most searching. Jon has studied under such divergent artists as Dave Liebman, Wynton Marsalis, Dick Oatts, Jason Moran and Victor Goines, and has performed and/or recorded with musical luminaries such as Billy Joel, Wynton Marsalis, Bright Eyes, Tom Harrell, Tommy Iago, Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, Deborah Gibson, John Abercrombie, Frank Wess, Wycliffe Gordon, Renee Fleming, Kenny Washington, Lou Reed, Jenny Lewis, Ron Sexsmith, and Ken Vandermark. Jon has performed and done clinics and workshops in the United States, Canada, Europe, Macau, Taiwan, Costa Rica, and Japan, and performs regularly in New York City’s top venues such as Birdland, the Jazz Standard, 55 Bar, the Jazz Gallery, Zebulon, Barbes, Sweet Rhythm, and Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola.

Jon Irabagon is a Filipino-American saxophonist, composer, and founder of Irabbagast Records.[1]
