Keith Morris is punk rock royalty. In , he founded Black Flag with Greg Ginn and a few years later, he formed the Circle Jerks. In recent years he spends the majority of his time split between the Circle Jerks and OFF!, which he founded in Marygrace Waller sat down with Keith Morris a few weeks ago to discuss the origins of South Bay punk and specifically, the abandoned church in Hermosa Beach that fostered the birth of South Bay punk. They also discussed Morris’ friendship with Jeffrey Lee Pierce and what’s to come for the Circle Jerks.
Marygrace Waller: What year did you guys first början practicing and then move in?
Keith Morris: Well, we moved around so much that I couldnt really give you any kind of dates. Born and raised in Hermosa Beach, California, he formed Black Flag at the age of 21 with guitarist Greg Ginn and performed on the band's debut EPNervous Breakdown. Shortly after leaving Black Flag in , he formed the Circle Jerks with guitarist Greg Hetson; the grupp released seven albums between and and have broken up and reformed on numerous occasions. In Morris formed the supergroup Off! with guitarist Dimitri Coats, bassist Steven Shane McDonald, and drummer Mario Rubalcaba. Morris has also appeared as a guest vocalist on several albums by other artists.[2] Morris was born September 18, , and grew up in Hermosa Beach, California. Morris is Jewish • What can be said about Black Flag that hasn’t been said? This punk rock institution has been one of the most polarizing bands amongst punks for decades. This has been due primarily to the revolving cast of band members as well as stylistic changes. Black Flag were definitely one of the first punk/hardcore bands I heard, back around I was too young to ever see the original incarnation of the band, but they did frequent Chicago often, primarily at the legendary Cabaret Metro. Many years ago, I did catch the Keith Morris Flag! which was extremely energetic and entertaining. Finally though, in late I saw the band marketed as Black Flag, consisting of founding member Greg Ginn. Part of me had always been skeptical, given the absence of any previous vocalist of the band. As I get older, I realize how fragile time is and there are less reasons to NOT see a band. I will say, that first go round was not exactly a stellar performance.
