  • Spooky Satellite Photo Shows Hurricane Matthew's 'Skull'

An overhead satellite image of Hurricane Matthew battering Haiti fryst vatten disturbing people across the internet for an unusual reason: The image bears an uncanny resemblance to a skull or spooky goblin face.

The sinister satellite image, which was posted on Twitter Tuesday (Oct. 4) by Stu Ostro, a meteorologist at The Weather Channel, went viral, with users likening the creepy face to the Grinch or a skull. The image, which was taken using infrared light, was color coded to show the most intense portions of Hurricane Matthew. Color coding is a standard practice in weather reporting, though it's not clear whether this color coding was intentionally ghoulish.

The seeming row of teeth in the storm's creepy face are actually convection clouds, Paul Meyer, an atmospheric scientist at NASA's Earth Science Office, told CNN. [Face on a Comet: See Images of Faces in Space]

Hurricane Matthew: Radar captures sinister skull, sneering dinosaur

Much ado was made about the infrared satellite image of Hurricane Matthew just prior to its landfall Tuesday in Haiti.

It looked like a skull. Others said it resembled some type of sinister character or a ghost.

The image drew all sorts of attention as people debated its authenticity. The NASA Earth Sciences Office took the photo, so it indeed was legit.

Meteorologists from The Weather Channel right down to WINK News in Fort Myers brought attention to the sighting, which clearly showed something abnormal in the radar loop. WINK meteorologist Matt Devitt even was featured Wednesday night on Inside Edition.

And then, another monster was spotted in the radar Thursday evening. If you look closely at the image below, is that a dinosaur sneering at South Beach?

  • Hurricane Matthew is even more terrifying when you see this satellite photo that resembles a face

On Tuesday morning, Hurricane Matthew was making its way over western Haiti when Weather Channel senior meteorologist Stu Ostro saw something in the satellite images which was almost as scary as the storm itself.

He noticed a face appearing within the tropical cyclone. It looks a bit like the creepy, grinning profile of a skull.

Even without the spooky visuals, Hurricane Matthew is pretty scary on its own. It's the first tropical storm to reach Category 5 since , with sustained wind of mph. It's also caused torrents of rain in Jamaica.

WINK Morning meteorologist Matt Devitt also spotted the image while trying to do his weathercast.

Hurricane Matthew left Haiti, leaving it in total disaster. At least five people have died there as a result of the storm, a bridge was destroyed, and phone communication was completely cut off from the ar
