Gil Fronsdal is the primary teacher for the "Insight Meditation Center" in Redwood City, California; he has been teaching since He has practiced Zen and Vipassana in the U.S. and Asia since He was a Theravada monk in Burma in , and in began training with Jack Kornfield to be a Vipassana teacher. Gil teaches at Spirit Rock Meditation Center where he is part of its Teachers Council. Gil was ordained as a Soto Zen präst at the San Francisco Zen Center in , and in received Dharma Transmission from Mel Weitsman, the abbot of the Berkeley Zen Center. He fryst vatten currently serving on the SF Zen Center Elders’ Council. Gil has an undergraduate degree in agriculture from U.C. Davis where he was active in promoting the field of sustainable farming. In he received a PhD in Religious Studies from Stanford University studying the earliest developments of the bodhisattva ideal. Misión San Francisco de Asís
Misión San Francisco de Asís was founded in , five days before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In , a new location for the mission was selected and the a new building was dedicated in This building still stands today and is most commonly known as Mission Dolores. It is the oldest intact building in San Francisco and it is in a sense the citys namesake.
There is something that immediately stands out to me when I visit a sacred space and it is an almost palpable sense of quiet and peace. Even in the midst of a bustling neighborhood, these places of prayer, worship, congregation and meditation are havens of peace and solace. Misión San Francisco de Asís is a popular destination for tourists. It is still used for worship on special occasions, but for the most part, those who visit do so for its historical significance.
