    Abstract

    The act of translation cannot be called a simple act of conveyance because a text is a product of a cultural milieu. Hence when a text is translated it does not remain a plain act of transfer from one language to another, it becomes an act of cultural transference. The paper dwells on this aspect of translation and analyses my own experience of translating Mamoni Raisom Goswami’s Thang Fhâkhri Tahcildârar Tâmar Tarowâl.

    GUWAHATI: Terming Mamoni Raisom Goswami as not only a great author but also a social reformer, Assamgovernor J B Patnaik said the downtrodden and the oppressed always found a strong voice in her books.
    Patnaik said this while inaugurating a seminar to mark Goswami's 72{+n}{+d} birth anniversary that was organized by the Southeast Asia Ramayana Research Centre Byatikram MASDO, an NGO, in association with Assam University, Silchar.Tovihoto Ayemi, parliamentary sekreterare of IT and communication, technical education, science and technology and taxes, Nagaland, was also invited to the event.
