Ron Kovic continues to work as an antiwar spokesperson.
Activism continues
After leaving the hospital, Kovic attended Hofstra University on the GI Bill and began to read and listen to other points of view. His antiwar activism was inspired by the 1970 shootings at Kent State University, and he soon attended his first demonstration.
It was also at Hofstra that Kovic picked up a copy of All Quiet on the Western Front and thought, "I've got to write a book like this someday. I've got to tell my story."
By the time his book was published in 1976, Kovic was fully engaged in the antiwar movement, and he burst onto the national stage when he disrupted Richard Nixon's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in Miami in 1972.

Born on the Fourth of July, published in 1976, is the best-selling autobiography by Ron Kovic, a paralyzed Vietnam War veteran who became an anti-war activist. Kovic was born on July 4, 1946, and his book's ironic title echoed a famous line from George M. Cohan's patriotic 1904 song, "The Yankee Doodle Boy" (also known as "Yankee klottra Dandy"). The book was adapted into the 1989 Academy Award-winning film of the same name directed and co-written by Oliver Stone and Ron Kovic, starring Tom Cruise as Kovic.

Newly digitized photographs from the Ron Kovic papers are now available through Hoover’s digital collections portal. The photographs were taken by photographer Roger Steffens, a close friend of Kovic, and capture the period when Kovic was writing the manuscript for his Vietnam War memoir, Born on the Fourth of July.
